How It Works
In 2024, Section 179 Deductions was updated to allow up to $1,200,000 in tax deductions (taxes filed in 2025). You don't have to write off a little every year. Instead, you can write off the full amount in one year, giving you an immediate bump when filing your taxes.
Your vehicle's gross vehicle rating (GVWR) is responsible for determining if and how it may qualify. Additionally, the vehicle must be used at least 50% of the time for legitimate business purposes.
- Light Section 179 Vehicles: Vehicles with a manufacturer's GVWR under 6,000 pounds. Includes passenger cars, crossovers, SUVs, and small utility trucks.
- Heavy Section 179 Vehicles: Vehicles with a manufacturer's GVWR of at least 6,000 pounds but no more than 14,000 pounds. Includes full-size SUVs, commercial vans, and pickup trucks.
- Other Section 179 Vehicles: Vehicles with a manufacturer's GVWR over 14,000 pounds or a vehicle modified for nonpersonal use.
